Madison Amateur Radio

ARES – Amateur Radio Emergency Services.

ARES is an organization created by the Amateur Radio Relay League ( ARRL) to provide an organization with a structured membership to provide communications in emergency as well as volunteer situations. Official members are licensed amateur radio operators and we train using standard procedures set up by the ARES organization. Each group reports back to the centralized ARES administration but individual groups can and do manage themselves in cooperation with the local authorities. Madison Ares is a sub group of the Madison Amateur Radio Club. We work closely with the local Emergency service team – one of our licensed members is the EOC Manager! We welcome new members whether or not you are a licensed Amateur. If you are interested in Emergency Service we welcome your participation. We can also assist anyone who is interested in getting an Amateur License.

History of ARES in Madison County:

July-1985: Pat Lightcap, WD4ODB (now K4NRD) was appointed Emergency Coordinator by Rudy Hubbard, WA4PUP, for Madison County. There was no real organization locally but area Hams were cooperative in responding to communications need. Jim Stanley, Madison County Emergency Manager, encouraged the placement of a complete Amateur Radio Station at the Madison County Emergency Operations Center.
August 1, 2004: First Regular Madison County ARES Net was held on the local 147.015 repeater.  The Net has continued since then at 9:00 pm local time each Sunday.  In 2008 we are averaging 11 check-ins each Net.  We have six Net Control Stations on rotation.
Feb 8, 2005:  First Madison County ARES meeting held at the County EOC. Since then regular monthly meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm.  These meetings have included training, sharing of ideas, preparing for exercises, and show-and-tell.
In 2014 and 2015 we have manned a booth at the Madison County Emergency Expo providing information on Amateur Radio and Emergency Services.
